Introduction

This page showcases some of the graphic art workds created by Jim Carnicelli. They span at least as far back as my high school days in the late 80's.

Title: Of Whom I Dream
Medium: Digital
Finished: 8/11/1996

I had been getting curious about using computers to create art, so I thought I'd try my hand at it. I started by creating the primary objects of the world, the cylinders, with a 3D rendering package and then slipped a picture of real clouds in the background. Finally, I placed clips of people in here and there where they seemed appropriate. This piece has no intended theme at all. I do like the effect.

Title: I Dream of Fire
Medium: Digital
Finished: 8/12/1996

This is my second attempt at digital art. This time, I actually had this image in mind. Again, there is no particular theme, but I wanted to convey a sense of the sultry and a feeling of awe at the surreal beauty of the woman featured. I must admit that I am thoroughly amazed at the amount of realism one can achieve when combining pictures that come from different sources with completely invented objects like the ground upon which the figure stands. How well the mind works to fool the viewer into believing this is an actual photo.

Title: Grasping Glory
Medium: Digital
Finished: 8/30/1996

Yet another attempt at digital art. Cool effects. No particular meaning.

Title: My Heaven
Medium: Digital
Finished: 8/31/1996

This was by far the best I had done to date. Ronda helped a great deal with developing the layout of it, and it wouldn't be as good as it is without that help. Ronda also helped by modeling for the beautiful pictures of her.

Title: Paradise Found
Medium: Digital
Finished: 9/15/1996

This unearthly paradise was fun to make. The sky is a modified photo of earth taken from low earth orbit, with a solar flare added in to give it that touch of realism. While Ronda's pose is nice, the lighting is, unfortunately, inappropriate for her position, and makes here look too out of place. All in all, though, the result is basically satisfying.

Title: Them, Who?
Medium: Digital
Finished: 10/19/1996

This was my first digital art work that consists entirely of hand-painted objects. There are no retouched photos grafted in. I am not impressed with my ability to freehand detailed entities like people, as in the case of the pair in the foreground, but I am impressed with the sense of depth Photoshop's airbrush affords me. In particular, the objects in the background drop out of focus in a way I've never been able to capture in physical media.

I set out to portray the sense I get sometimes of living in a city surrounded by people who barely even notice me. When they do, most are deeply afraid to see someone in so alien a state--happy. The figures in the background are brutish and miserable. They wield objects made in a technological age as blunt instruments of destruction, oblivious of their original purposes. They battle each other or lurk amidst the shadows. Theirs is a world of dull gray mediocrity and death. The figures in the foreground remain untouched amidst all this, content with their own lives and unscathed by the horror of a world they refuse to accept as necessary. These are heroes.
